Wind Farm Cable and Reel Recycling
Sonoco, a world leader in recycling, now includes scrap cable recovery at wind farm construction sites in their EcoReel® recycling program. Together with associate company American Cable Recyclers, Sonoco Reels takes care of unwinding, securing and purchasing high-value #1 and #2 insulated or bare brite copper remnants. They will also also unwind, store and buy scrap URD and other cable plus knock down, remove and recycle the wood reels.
Sonoco’s EcoReel recycling program is the most comprehensive, cost-effective nailed wood reel recycling program in the industry and is the only national provider of reel recycling services. “This new wind farm program is a convenient way for contractors to keep their sites safer and more secure,” said Wendy Williams, Recycling Operations Manager at Sonoco. “Our customers as well as the utilities, contractors and distributors they supply can quickly recognize the environmental and fiscal advantages of reusing wood reels.”
A proud member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI), Sonoco recovered over 38,000 wood reels in 2012 saving nearly 14,000 trees. All viable reels are put through a rigorous seven-step process to make sure every recycled and refurbished reel will deliver like-new performance. Reels can often be reused three or more times. Sonoco’s EcoReel recycling program began in 1991.
